Rated 91 Points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
This wine enjoys a three-decade tradition at Beaumont Family Wines. The 2022 Bot River Jackals River Pinotage follows the house style, which aims for a focused, mid-weight style. It is fermented in open concrete vats with two punch-downs per day. The idea is not to overwork the cap. A small portion of new oak is used over 14 months of aging. The wine shows bright fruit, plum and a distant note of wild rose. You might also recognize something succulent like meat on the grill, but all the aromas are held back with balanced restraint. It finishes with a hint of tart fruit. The wine is made with old vines planted in 1974 with some fruit from plantings made in 2018.

A fresh, cool and medium-bodied pinotage that has aromas and flavors of hazelnut, plum, licorice and bay leaf. Lightly chewy on the palate with a savory-herb undertone. Drink now or hold.

Tasting Notes
This is still an elegant style of Pinotage with red berry and ripe fruit flavors with fine tannins and lovely fruit on the palate.
Alcohol: 13%
Crafted in the cooler climate of South Africa’s Bot River region, this medium-bodied Pinotage (approx 13% ABV) delights with fresh red berry flavors, smooth tannins, and exceptional drinkability. Grapes are hand-harvested mid-February to mid-March, fermented in open concrete tanks, and aged for 14 months in barrel, followed by 8 months in tank. Enjoy slightly chilled or aged for up to 15 years. Pairs beautifully with barbecue favorites like smoked brisket or grilled lamb, as well as aged Gouda, cheddar, or smoky blue cheese.
Viticulture & Vinification
Arturo's and Vitruvian vineyards, established in 1974 and 2019 respectively, are situated at an elevation of 80 meters with a southeast and west orientation on a sloped terrain. The soil is Bokkeveld Shale, which is conducive to the maritime, cool, and windy climate of the region.
The harvest occurs from mid-February to mid-March, benefiting from a cold, wet winter that allows for healthy vine rest and a perfect ripening season. The grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed at the cellar before being placed in open fermenters.
Fermentation begins with nonSaccharomyces yeast and is inoculated after a few days of soaking. The cap is punched down three times daily, and the grapes are pressed nearly dry before transferring to a tank for malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures for 10 months in French oak barrels, 225 liters in size, with 20% being new oak. Bottled in January 2024.
Beaumont Family Wines
Beaumont is a charming, family-run farm and winery situated in the quaint Overberg Village of Bot River. The farm is home to the region’s oldest wine cellar and is steeped in history dating back to the 1700’s. In 2004, Sebastian Beaumont, having honed his skills working in vineyards, took over the reins in the cellar and has continued to build the Beaumont reputation. The flagship Chenin Blanc and Hope Marguerite has received Platter 5-Star ratings 12 times with the last nine consecutive vintages receiving five stars.
Founded in 1974 when the Beaumont family purchased the farm, the first wine under the Beaumont label was produced by Jayne Beaumont in 1994. The 490-hectare property includes 30 hectares of vines, 6 hectares of pears, 3 hectares of almonds, and some olive trees, surrounded by protected natural vegetation. The vineyards, situated on ancient shale soils, produce elegant, complex wines that capture the essence of the region.
Beaumont cultivates varieties such as Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Mourvedre, and Shiraz, along with smaller amounts of Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Tinta Barocca, Petit Verdot, and Malbec.
