Rated 92 Points by James Suckling
A juicy and rich wine with dried berry, shaved chocolate and hints of tea. Full body, firm tannins and a flavorful finish. Some lemon rind undertones. Drink now. May 23, 2016
Sommelier Wine Awards - Gold List
This Petit Verdot took home a well-deserved Gold medal with what Gymkhana’s Valentin Radosav described as ‘a nose of blackberry and gamey notes, leading to a charcoal-granitic minerality on the palate with ripe, dark fruit at the core, along with espresso and chocolate notes, and well-balanced tannins’, with team leader Annette Scarfe MW highlighting its ‘more rustic style, packed with dark bramble fruit, fresh acidity and big but ripe tannins’. Finca Decero Mini Ediciones Petit Verdot Mendoza 2013
As the name suggests, Mini Ediciones are highly limited parcels of wine. From lesser known varieties, these wines are wholly expressive of the Remolinos Vineyard and represent an opportunity to taste a variety rarely seen in a pure form.
In 2006, in recognition of its unique potential from the coarse, low vigour soils of our Remolinos Vineyard, the winery selected a few exceptional barrels of wine to make a well-deserved Decero Mini Ediciones Petit Verdot.
Petit Verdot
Petit Verdot is one of our three ‘rare varieties & limited edition’ wines. Of this vintage only 9912 bottles of Petit Verdot were made. The wine is abundant in wild blueberry flavors with a hint of quince on the finish. Deeply flavored and balanced with structural tannins this wine has great potential for extensive cellaring.
Vintage
2013 was cooler than other recent vintages, with cool temperatures throughout the summer and fall plummeting particularly at night time. As such, the winery decided to pick Malbec between 5-7 days later than the average year in order to achieve full phenolic ripeness, whilst Cabernet and Tannat ripened towards the end of April with perfect tannin structure. These cool conditions also lead to more pronounced acidity and aromatics balanced by seductive tannins.
Estate
Within a few vintages, Finca Decero has become recognized not only for having one of the highest quality vineyards in all of Mendoza, but also for catapulting into an elite group of the most highly regarded producers in Argentina. Once a desolate piece of land in the foothills of the Andes, absent of everything but shrubs, Finca Decero is now a one-of-a-kind vineyard where each vine is nurtured by hand and the winemaking is without compromise. The wines are made by Marcos Fernandez, formerly a winemaker for Paul Hobbs in Napa Valley.
Vineyard
Located at 3500 feet, in the renowned Mendoza appellation of Agrelo, our one-of a-kind Remolinos Vineyard takes its name from 'remolinos' – whirlwinds which keep the grapes dry and in perfect condition before being handpicked each vintage.
Finca Decero
Decero, meaning “from scratch”, was born of a bare patch of land and a family´s love affair with wine. Winemaking in Thomas Schmidheiny´s family went back to his grandparents in Switzerland and, just as Napa had inspired his mother, Adda, in the 1970s, so too did Agrelo capture the heart and mind of Thomas, when travelling over the Andes into Argentina, 20 years later.
Starting “decero” was exactly how Thomas Schmidheiny dreamt of beginning a world-class vineyard, free from constraint of tradition and full of passion. Here in Agrelo, the source of some of Argentina’s finest red wines, Thomas instinctively knew that he had found the place to continue the family legacy and to handcraft wines whose allure would lie in being true to their origin.
The beautiful yet desolate spot Thomas had found was cradled in the heart of Agrelo, in the foothills of the Andes. This land, bare apart from wild shrubs, was to become our Remolinos Vineyard.
We named the vineyard after its strangest and most special natural attribute, the remolinos, or tiny whirlwinds. These gusts of wind stir up the bare soil into dancing spiral forms which thread their way through the vines, keeping the grapes in perfect condition during the growing season. Situated 3,500 feet (1,050 meters) above sea level, our vineyard is the highest in Agrelo: here the cool night westerly air from the Andes passes over a land that is warm by day.
In coming to understand the unique qualities of this place, certain things became very clear to us. We would make no compromises, planting only the red varieties perfectly suited to Agrelo. The soil presented a tapestry of natural variations that meant we would have to get to know it and nurture it inch by inch, knowing the reward would be that every parcel of wine would have its own character. Our viticulture had to be sustainable, treading lightly in the environment and having a positive role in the life of the local community. Our winemaking philosophy required both local knowledge and international expertise, but above all it needed to be hands-on from start to finish: we called it our “amano” approach.
With Thomas’ world-class vision and conviction in starting from scratch, Finca Decero is a legacy for generations to come. We are proud to have built Decero from the ground up, and of the wines we have crafted by hand to be true to their origin, our one-of-a kind Remolinos Vineyard in Agrelo.
