During the economic recession of 2001, and Owen Roe’s first couple vintages as a winery, NW growers were facing hardship in selling their fruit, come harvest time. At Owen Roe, we wanted to help our farming friends and prevent missing out on such well-tended, beautiful fruit. We were presented with the difficult and costly purchasing of grapes to process, cellar and bottle, waiting several months to recover our costs on the finished wine.
To overcome this obstacle, we decided to bring back the historical business practice of sharecropping, resulting in the aptly named wine, “Sharecropper’s.” This partnership meant that Owen Roe would take the fruit, make the wine and once it was sold, share the profits with our growers. This remains an important part of our history and due to the success of this wine; we are now able to pay our growers upfront.

Willamette Valley, Oregon
The Willamette Valley is a 150-mile (240 km) long valley in Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The Willamette River flows the entire length of the valley, and it is surrounded by mountains on three sides – the Cascade Range to the east, the Oregon Coast Range to the west, and the Calapooya Mountains to the south.
The valley is synonymous with the cultural and political heart of Oregon, and is home to approximately 70 percent of its population including the six largest cities in the state: Portland, Eugene, Salem, Gresham, Hillsboro and Beaverton.
The valley's numerous waterways, particularly the Willamette River, are vital to the economy of Oregon, as they continuously deposit highly fertile alluvial soils across its broad, flat plain. A massively productive agricultural area, the valley was widely publicized in the 1820s as a "promised land of flowing milk and honey". Throughout the 19th century it was the destination of choice for the oxen-drawn wagon trains of emigrants who made the perilous journey along the Oregon Trail.
Today the valley is often considered synonymous with "Oregon Wine Country", as it contains more than 19,000 acres (7,700 ha) of vineyards and 500+ wineries.
Owen Roe
Sharecropper’s Wine Company
At Owen Roe, we are committed to practicing the highest standards of winemaking. Since our first vintage in 1999, our goal has been simple; to produce beautiful wines from superior sites in the Pacific Northwest. A place where the fruit ripens slowly and fully, resulting in excellent acidity and balance. All of our grapes are hand harvested, handled with minimal processing, small-lot fermented and aged in French oak barrels.
Established in 1999, our emphasis towards Northwest wines has evolved to showcase the unique terroir within the prestigious grape growing regions of the Yakima and Willamette Valleys. Owners, David & Angelica O’Reilly have a passion and history dedicated to fine wines and together, they have developed a diversified portfolio that has been recognized globally by critics, wine writers and consumers.
History
A few decades ago, Angelica and David O’Reilly married and embarked a life together surrounded by children, country living, vineyards and wine. All of which provide a wholesome and organic way of living for the family. Angelica insists that the food served on their table is sourced locally and organically, from their own gardens or from small family-owned farms in the area. Similarly, when Angelica and David started a winery in 1999, their wines had to be farmed naturally and organically as possible from the best vineyards farmed as meticulously as their own.
Today, Angelica and David’s eldest three children are in the wine business and share the same values and love of fresh ingredients, gardening and the outdoors. Having a love and talent for art and design, Angelica has designed, drawn and photographed a number of wine labels for Owen Roe wines. A few related paintings of vineyards and wine enhance the walls of their home. David seeks to, “gently coax the most authentic expression of each varietal” using minimal handling and traditional techniques. Selection of site along with hands on involvement throughout the growing season is some of the most important winemaking work David does. His picking decisions are always made in the vineyard, “Its only by observing nature that we can harvest fruit at its delicate peak of aromatic development, while maintaining balanced pH and high acidity.”
They are delighted to share their life work that finds expression in the exceptional wines of the Yakima and Willamette Valleys.
