Romaneira's position on the north bank of the Douro above Pinhao always delivers rich, smooth and powerful wine. Its tannins, beautifully integrated into the ripe black fruits, are rounded, offering a dry core and a rich future. The wine, the top offering from this estate, is almost ready to drink. Just wait until at least 2018.

The 2013 Tinto Reserva is a blend of Touriga Nacional (35%) and Touriga Franca (65%), aged for 14 months in a 75/25 mixture of used and new French oak. It comes in at 13% alcohol. This is where Romaneira steps up and adds more concentration, a feeling of fullness in the mouth and a tighter, more gripping finish. While not exactly abandoning the winery's basic, subtle style —the wine is approachable, shows refinement and finesse — this understated red sneaks up on you, the fruit lingering beautifully and becoming more interesting as it airs out. While the fruit becomes juicier and tastier the longer this is open, it is always dry and serious. All the while, it's a perfect food wine, simply lovely. There is not a hair out of place here. Nothing will make you go "wow," but this bottle will drain quickly at the table.

A strict selection of our finest wines, vinified from the noble classic varieties of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, the Reserva is already recognized as one of the outstanding wines of the Douro valley. Vinification: The wine was vinified in our specially designed conical stainless steel temperature controlled vats, within a temperature range of 25/28 degrees celsius.
Vintage Conditions
In 2013, the winter was extremely wet, and rain continued to fall heavily until April. This was beneficial because it restored the soils water reserves, which were very low after 2 dry years. Then a cool and wet spring preceded a dry hot summer, with virtually no rain. These climatic conditions, conditioned the evolution of the vegetative cycle, resulting into a low production year and delaying ripening in the vineyards by 10 days. Precipitation occurred on September 5, although a little late, gave us new courage. So, we decided to wait a few days. The grapes have improved significantly and we started on September 10th, with grapes in perfect health and maturation that produced musts of extremely high quality.

"I have always believed that the great vineyard terroirs of the Douro, which have hitherto found their expression in Vintage Ports or in the other quality styles of Port, had the potential to express themselves through high quality red and white unfortified wines. We know that the grape varieties are remarkable for their quality and diversity, we know that the terroirs can produce greatness: our challenge has been, and remains, to find ways to vinify unfortified wines from the Douro that can take their rightful place among the great wines of the world, alongside the other great classic regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy or the Rhone Valley."
The Future
We are entering an extremely exciting period for the Douro Valley in general, and for Quinta da Romaneira in particular. Though we will always continue to produce highest quality Port wine, the principal focus of our activities is now on the production of great unfiltered Douro wines. The recent successes of these wines – which only began to be produced at Romaneira in 2004 – give a heady promise of great things to come.
The Douro Valley, long known as one of the great viticultural regions of the world for its Port wines, which have never been better than they are today, is also in the process of re-inventing itself as a producer of great unfortified wines. Romaneira is at the forefront of this revolution: these wines, with their wild Douro aromas, their exuberant fruit, allied with their old world subtlety and finesse, are among the most thrilling discoveries that a wine lover can make today. History
Romaneira’s Past
Romaneira has a very ancient history. Records exist of a vineyard here in the 17th and 18th centuries during which time the property successively belonged to the families of Sousa Guimaraes, whose initials appear on the gate of the Quinta with the date of 1854, Lacerda, Dona Clara de Lacerda having given her name to one of the two main quinta houses, and Monteiro de Barros, who enlarged the quinta to its present size in the 1940s.
As one of the principal quintas of the Douro, Romaneira of course appears on Baron Forrester's map of the Douro, and is mentioned by the great Port wine authors of the 19th century, such as Henry Vizetelly. The Viscount de Vila Maior writes of Romaneira as "one of the best in the Douro, remarkable for body, mellowness and aroma". Single Quinta Ports from Romaneira were auctioned by Christies in 1872, the very first of its kind to be sold in this way.
Remarkably, Vila Maior praises the character and personality of the wine of Romaneira due to the Touriga Nacional grape planted there: Today Touriga Nacional still represents the majority of the plantings at Romaneira (about 40%) and is a key element in our best wines, both for Vintage Port and for our top Douro red wines.
2004 – Present: A new era
A group of private investors, passionate about the Douro, acquired the property in 2004. The management was entrusted to the recognized team of Christian Seely and Antonio Agrellos, responsible since 1993 for the renaissance of that other great property in the Douro, Quinta do Noval. Seely and Agrellos have together been responsible for some of the greatest Vintage Ports to be produced in the Douro, and have also been pioneers in the production of unfortified red wines in the Douro. Christian Seely’s long years of experience in the management of Chateau Pichon Baron and Petit Village in Bordeaux have contributed to the success of these Douro red wines. With Christian Seely as managing director and shareholder, and Antonio Agrellos as consultant oenologist, Romaneira has already since 2004 produced a series of excellent Vintage Ports (2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2011). But the real revolution at Quinta da Romaneira manifested itself above all in the production of unfortified red wines of outstanding quality, as well as whites and Roses. The stimulus to the burgeoning Douro Revolution dates from 2004.
The success of our wines on the National and International stage would not have been possible without the arduous work carried out in the improvement of the vineyard, undertaken with the objective of exploiting the potential of our terroir to its maximum. The old vines have been carefully tended and brought to the fullness of their potential. A large program of replantation of the vineyards throughout the property has also been undertaken, contributing in this way to the enlargement of the expression of the distinct microclimates and terroirs of the Quinta.
Based on the research work “The History of Quinta da Romaneira” (by Prof. António Barros Cardoso, December 2015), and approved by the Port and Douro Wine Institute (the “IVDP”) in February 2016, Romaneira is now updating its logo with the official foundation year.
Romaneira, as we know it since the first half of the 20th century, is the result of several small and very old pre-phylloxera Estates, most of them classified with the designation of “Vinho de Feitoria” in 1757 (the highest quality at that time – with the capacity of being exported through the English “Feitoria”, based at the city of Porto), during the first demarcations ordered by Marquis of Pombal. The abundance of Rosemary (“Rosmarinus Officinalis”) at the Estate was probably the origin of its name. In reality, 1757 marks just the first record of the Estate, since the vineyard was surely planted a few decades before.
In 2017 Romaneira celebrated its 260th official anniversary.
