Pecorino Wine
Pecorino is a light-skinned wine grape used in Italy's eastern coastal regions, particularly in Marche and Abruzzo. A classic Pecorino-based wine is dry and mineral, straw-yellow in color and has an elegantly floral bouquet of acacia and jasmine.
The variety has a long, complicated and all-too-common history. It has been cultivated in the Marche region for hundreds of years but low yields saw it replaced by more-productive grape varieties like Trebbiano.
Pecorino Grapes
By the mid-20th Century, Pecorino was thought to be extinct. In the 1980s, a local producer researching native varieties investigated a rumor of some forgotten vines in an overgrown vineyard.
Cuttings were taken and propagated, and eventually grew enough grapes to make a very good wine in the early 1990s. Since then, the variety's plantings have grown exponentially, and Pecorino is now found across the Marche, Abruzzo, Umbria and Tuscany.
Pecorino offers high acidity as well as a high sugar content, making it very useful in the winery. The sugar translates into reasonably high alcohol, but the acidity helps to balance this, ensuring the wines are still crisp and fresh.
It does particularly well at higher altitudes where there is good exposure to sunlight and cooling breezes.
The Offida DOCG is Pecorino's key appellation – it is the only DOCG-level appellation that allows varietal wines from the grape. This hasn't limited production, and several key varietal examples of Pecorino are made under the regional IGTs in Marche and Abruzzo.
Pecorino is also permitted as a blending partner in Falerio (Falerio dei Colli Ascolani) wines, alongside Passerina and Trebbiano.
The name Pecorino means "little sheep" and is perhaps more widely associated with Pecorino cheese, which is made from ewes' milk and is entirely unrelated, save for its etymological link. The grape is so called supposedly because it was a favorite treat for flocks of sheep driven to lower pastures.
Pecorino cheese is, coincidentally, a good food pairing for Pecorino wine.
Offida Wine
Offida town is located in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region of central Italy. Its vineyards were once covered by the Rosso Piceno DOC but received their own classification in 2001. They were further promoted to full DOCG status in June 2011.
The white wines must be either varietal Offida Passerina or Offida Pecorino. Red wines, in contrast, are all designated as Offida Rosso, with no grape variety on the label. This is despite them also requiring an 85-percent minimum component of Montepulciano. The remainder can be made up of a maximum 15 percent of one or more of other authorized red varieties from the province of Ascoli Piceno.
Other production rules for the red wine are quite stringent. They must be aged for at least 24 months before release. Of this, 12 months must be spent in barrel. Earlier specifications for the rosso called for at least 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. Regulations also previously permitted sparkling white wines and vin santo styles.
As with most Italian wines, they are made to accompany the local cuisine. The Offida whites are perfect with olive ascolane (deep-fried breaded olives stuffed with meat) and fish. The reds are an ideal match with vincisgrassi (a type of lasagne) and stuffed pigeon.

Wine is an art capable of making people dream.
Angela Velenosi
This is a statement we firmly believe in. Indeed, it is the very basis of our philosophy, deriving from tradition and ancient techniques, interpreted in a flexible and imaginative way to produce the most fragrant glass of wine.
We have learnt a lot from wine.
The very management of our company draws inspiration from its positive values: integrity, sincerity and a genuine passion for our work.
The time required for wine-making should last neither too long, nor too short: just natural, to achieve the best results according to a genuine family tradition, combined with the most advanced technology.
Quality, ongoing research to achieve the best result, the aspiration to the perfect balance between taste and colour, bouquet and aftertaste.
The wait for the magical moment when harvest can start, and then the slow birth and evolution of wine.
Thus, with honesty, naturalness and care, our company has been carrying out its activity for almost thirty years, with undiminished passion.
It is in this spirit that we aim to whomever shares our inclination, to everyone looking for an old, but still topical taste: the taste of purity in order to respect the nobility of wine.
Our success is due not only to the quality of our grapes, but also to our highly specialized staff. Attilio Pagli (winemaker), one of the most famous in Italy and Cesare Ferrari, consultant for a long series of companies from the Franciacorta area and since 2010, for our two types of classic method.
History
Inspired to create a harmony between taste and color, the Velenosi Winery was born in 1984. Ercole and Angela Velenosi, with Paolo Garbini since 2005, combining the artisan tradition with modern technologies, have reinterpreted the winemaking processes with creativity.
They have created a company that today brings the scents and shades of the Piceno territory to the whole world through wines with a unique character.
From wine we learned patience, waiting for the time necessary to obtain intense sips and an incomparable flavor. A continuous care and research that echo in the reflections of the glasses.
Who We Are
Since 1984 on your tables
The Velenosi winery was founded in 1984 by the will of two very young entrepreneurs, Angela and Ercole Velenosi. Then with the experience of Dr. Paolo Garbini, Velenosi Srl was established in 2005.
Over 35 years of experience in the sector and strong passion have allowed us to create this reality where, through the use of cutting-edge equipment, exceptional wine is produced.
The heart of the company is located in the historic city of Ascoli Piceno, which is located in the Marche region and a distance of about 20 km from the Adriatic Sea and at a height of 150/200 meters above sea level.
The farms of the company extend among the hills that surround the splendid valley of the Tronto river, which thanks to its clayey and fertile soils, has always been suited to the cultivation of vines.
In addition to the four farms located in Ascoli Piceno, Castorano, Monsampolo and Castel di Lama, there is a vineyard in the area of Ancarano (TE) and in the area of San Marcello (AN), between the Castles of Jesi.
From the beginning, the winery has achieved great success with journalistic criticisms. Published in the most renowned national and international newspapers such as: Wine Spectator, Robert Parker, Gambero Rosso, Luca Maroni, A.I.S. and many others.
This is why it is present throughout the national territory with the collaboration of 85 agencies and abroad where it is present on 52 nations both in Europe and in the rest of the world. Production to date is around 2,500,000 bottles and expectations certainly do not stop there.
