Some fruit from Roncaglie goes into this wine, along with tidbits from other scattered Barolo vineyards. Aged for two years in large oak barrel, the Vietti 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is not too far off from tasting and smelling like a full-fledged Barbaresco, or even a Barolo for that matter, since it does technically have the DNA of both. The fruit is delivered with fresh, vertical intensity, and the wine's texture is firm and tensile. I like this vintage more than I thought I would. November 20024

A deep and concentrated wine with aromas of bramble fruit, bark, graphite and a touch of earth. The palate is silky and well crafted, with elegant tannins, a medium body and freshness that balances the aftertaste. (MM) November 2024

The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco has a medium red hue and is fruity on the nose, with aromas of fresh red berries, dusty earth, roses, and fresh spice. Medium-bodied, refreshing, and approachable, it offers fine tannins, a delicate, juicy feel on the palate, and a clean finish. This is a charming Langhe Nebbiolo to enjoy now or over the next 5-6 years. (AF) May 2025

The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is a very serious wine in its peer group. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and orange peel give this rich, textured red notable aromatic brightness and presence. This is far from an easygoing Langhe Nebbiolo.

Tasting Notes
The Vietti "Perbacco" Nebbiolo Langhe is a standout example of Nebbiolo that captures the essence of the Langhe region with both finesse and depth. The nose reveals a vibrant bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, and dried roses, complemented by hints of tar, licorice, and earthy undertones. On the palate, it presents a medium to full-bodied structure with lively acidity and well-integrated tannins. Flavors of ripe red fruit, plum, and a touch of spice are balanced by nuances of leather and tobacco. The finish is long and elegant, with persistent notes of red fruit and a subtle mineral edge. This Nebbiolo offers both immediate enjoyment and the potential for aging, showcasing the classic Nebbiolo profile in a more approachable format.
Winemaking
Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 3-4 weeks at controlled temperature (28°-32°C), followed by malolactic fermentation in steel tanks and/ or barriques. Each parcel is processed and aged separately, until the moment when the lots that will be used for Langhe Nebbiolo and those that will continue to age for Barolo, are selected.
Ageing
After malolactic fermentation, the aging continues in wood (barriques and large barrels) for about 18-20 months, at the end of which it is blended in steel for bottling.
Fruity with hints of mint, spices and raspberry. Round, elegant tannins add to a long, refined finish. Robust, intense, powerful in youth; complex, elegant with ageing.
Vietti
Vietti wines come from Castiglione Falletto Vineyards, in the heart of the Barolo zone. The qualities of sandy-calcareous soil in this area gives a unique tannic heritage with very elegant olfactory sensations.
The History
The history of the Vietti winery traces its roots back to the 19th Century. Only at the beginning of the 20th century, however, did the Vietti name become a winery offering its own wines in bottle.
Patriarch Mario Vietti, starting from 1919 made the first Vietti wines, selling most of the production in Italy. His most significant achievement was to transform the family farm, engaged in many fields, into a grape-growing and wine-producing business.
Then, in 1952, Alfredo Currado (Luciana Vietti’s husband) continued to produce high quality wines from their own vineyards and purchased grapes. The Vietti winery grew to one of the top-level producers in Piemonte and was one of the first wineries to export its products to the USA market.
Alfredo was one of the first to select and vinify grapes from single vineyards (such as Brunate, Rocche and Villero). This was a radical concept at the time, but today virtually every vintner making Barolo and Barbaresco wines offers “single vineyard” or “cru-designated” wines.
Alfredo is also called the “Father of Arneis” as in 1967 he invested a lot of time to rediscover and understand this nearly-lost variety. Today Arneis is the most famous white wine from Roero area, north of Barolo. Setting such a fine example with Arneis, even fellow vintners as far away as those on the west coast of the United States now are cultivating and producing Arneis!
